Everyone does their “best of the year” lists and plenty of other sites do a better job than I. However since people a generation older than me often outpace me on musical discoveries, I thought I’d throw out a different list. At the end of 2010, I had hoped to compile a short list of my favorite musical finds during the year. Unfortunately, time makes a fool of me and I only really got one penned to paper. I might come back this month and throw out some other names, but more than likely, I’ll get distracted. However, for what it’s worth – here’s one:
Love and Ire Song – Frank Turner:
Only a few months into 2010, a good friend of mine sat me down and told me “I think this song will be one of your new favorites.” On my first listen, the lyrics burrowed deep in my brain and completely resonated with nearly everything I’d been feeling since well before the album’s release in 2008. Not only does this song have an extremely catchy melody and chorus anyone can sing along to, it melds both the sour, jaded feelings I tend to get regarding music and punk/hardcore ideals with the hopeful feelings the same music and DIY attitudes give me. Anyone who’s frustrated with the state of things – be it in music, politics or a midlife crisis can identify with and hopefully learn something from Love and Ire Song.
